A part to play: what does the citizens’ advice bureau do for consumers and their debts?
With the economic climate as it is and Britain stumbling out of recession and over the finish line by a measly 0.1% growth, it is clear the country is lagging behind other major nations already that are rising to their feet again. 2010 is looking to be the year where, as an online poll highlighted, more than a third of consumers’ highlight paying off credit card debt and overdrafts as their key financial goal, and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is one of the UK-wide independent charities that give free, confidential information and advice to ‘provide the advice people need for the problems they face’, and to ‘improve the policies and principles that affect people’s lives’. Recession has had a huge impact on people’s lives – particularly with unemployment reaching record levels, and as such the CAB service is currently seeing more people than ever seek help for their debt problems.
The rapid development of a mass consumer credit market has led to credit card debt being the single biggest issue the Bureau deals with, with 380,000 enquiries per year of the 950,000 they receive. Student debt has become a major issue in recent years, with politicians wrangling over the rights and wrongs of tuition fees that often lead to the culture of ‘debt as obligatory’ that has been created. Over 50,000 under 25s visited a CAB in England or Wales in 2008/09.
Much of the Citizens Advice Bureau’s work involves providing advice and help regarding debt management programs, and aiding consumer’s other related problems such as welfare benefit issues and landlord/tenant disputes. Both locally and nationally, the bureau uses statistics and personal stories from client’s problems to influence review of policy and administrative practices which can be unfair to consumers, campaigning for change that can benefit millions. The Citizens Advice Bureau website clearly set out the positives - and the risks - of following the debt management route. They also provide different fact sheets on debt topics, including bankruptcy advice and letters consumers can use to approach creditors themselves. They have recently launched an online debt management campaign for young people, involving youth in creating two entertaining documentary style short films to help those with economic issues.
In the last year alone, the Citizens Advice Bureau, according to their webpage, helped 1.9 million people to solve 6 million problems through face-to-face discussion, telephone and email services, and online via Adviceguide.org.uk.
